Today's Times-Tribune reports that a tragic explosion in Indianola, Pennsylvania has killed two workers at a natural gas well. A welding project near the well is suspected to have triggered the deadly explosion and subsequent fire, though investigations as to the cause remain underway.
Though this particular well is not part of the Marcellus Shale system, its new notoriety highlights the dangers of natural gas drilling inside and outside the Marcellus Shale region and raises questions about the effectiveness of safety regulations that protect workers as well as people who live near the wells.
Many people who work for the industry and/or live near drilling sites are growing increasingly concerned about the impact natural gas drilling will have on their lives.
