Thief Returns Oven to Rightful Owner!
Is it a theft if you return the item?
Theft is the unlawful taking of another person's property, without permission, and with the intent to deprive the owner permanently of the use of their own property. Theft is a property crime. Many business and organizations are targeted by thieves because of their large amount of valuable items and lack of security. Even churches are targeted!
The Citizens Voice reports that a Wilkes-Barre man stole a $10,000 oven from Our Lady of Hope Church on Park Avenue on March 13. The man then tried to sell the oven to a local business, but the business refused to accept the oven. The man eventually returned the oven to the Church.
Unfortunately, you can still be charged with theft even if you return the item to the owner. Despite your clean conscience, you will likely have a bad criminal record.
If you are charged with theft in Luzerne County or anywhere in NEPA you should call a defense attorney as soon as possible to protect your legal rights.
